Idaho State Land & Soil Evaluation Event
Each fall, the East Cassia and West Cassia Soil & Water Conservation Districts host the Idaho State Land & Soil Evaluation Career Development Event in Burley, bringing together top-performing FFA and 4-H teams from across Idaho.
This long-standing event challenges students to evaluate soil profiles, identify physical and chemical properties, and make informed decisions about land use and management. Through hands-on field work, participants gain a deeper understanding of how soil characteristics influence crop production, conservation practices, and long-term land stewardship.
Regional contests held throughout the state engage hundreds of students each year, with top teams advancing to the state competition. Many participants go on to compete at the national level, continuing a program that has supported agricultural education and conservation awareness for decades.
This event reflects the strength of locally led conservation. District supervisors, NRCS staff, educators, landowners, and volunteers work together to create a meaningful, real-world learning experience—helping prepare the next generation to care for Idaho’s soil and water resources.
